House will vote to block Lame Duck session
Tell your representative to vote YES on the Price Resolution to block a Lame Duck Session!
August 6, 2010
As we’ve mentioned in our recent Town Hall meeting alerts, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is calling the House of Representatives back into an impromptu session next week. The agenda of scheduled votes includes Rep. Tom Price’s (R-GA) privileged resolution to block a possible Lame Duck session after the November mid-term election. The no-lame-duck resolution has been scheduled to receive a recorded vote on Tuesday, August 10th, so your representative needs to hear from you today!
A Lame Duck session is when either chamber of Congress reconvenes in an even-numbered year following the November general elections to consider various items of business. Some lawmakers who return for this session will not be in the next Congress. Hence, they are informally called “lame duck” Members because there will be no electoral consequences for their votes.
Blocking a Lame Duck session will eliminate the risk of Congress attempting to jam through stealth legislation—such as a massive Appropriations Omnibus bill or an immigration bill—that contains the language of The Puerto Rico Democracy Act (H.R. 2499) which passed the House in April, but still awaits action in the Senate.
Puerto Rico’s Governor Luis Fortuno has recently been advocating that congressional immigration legislation should include the Puerto Rican statehood bill language, but we cannot let that happen! Passing the Price Resolution is the best way to prevent this sort of mischief in Congress after the American people have had their say in the November election.
Call and email your representative now and tell them to support the Price no-lame-duck resolution by voting YES next Tuesday!
